The former managing director of the BVI Ports Authority, Oleanvine Maynard, who was a known accomplice of former Premier Andrew Fahie in their drug trafficking and money laundering scheme, has seen her sentencing hearing delayed once again.
Oleanvine Maynard confessed to her involvement in the Fahie’s conspiracy to smuggle thousands of kilos of cocaine through the waters of the British Virgin Islands and launder the proceedings from their illegal enterprise.
Initially, Maynard’s sentencing was scheduled for the 21st of August, 2023, after entering the guilty plea and agreeing to testify against Fahie so she could walk away with a reduced sentence.
Due to the delayed start of Fahie’s trial, Maynard’s own sentencing hearing continued to get pushed back. The court has not furnished a reason for the latest delay, merely making the announcement through a notice that was issued last Thursday. According to the notice, the sentencing hearing has been rescheduled for the 28th of March, which is one month before Fahie’s sentencing hearing.
On the 20th of November, 2023, Maynard’s son Kadeem Stephan Maynard was sentenced to serve 57 months in prison. Last year, he pleaded guilty to a count of conspiracy to illegally import cocaine.
Fahie’s own sentencing hearing sentencing date is in a questionable position after issues arose after the verdict, following his conviction on the 8th of February.
The trial came to an unprecedented juncture as two jurors initially agreed that Fahie was guilty on four counts of conspiracy but later stated that they were having second thoughts about the verdict, which placed the trial’s conclusion on shaky ground.
Judge Kathleen Williams, bridged the gap between the two sides and asked the lawyers involved to continue to examine past cases in the state and the nation on the whole to ensure that Fahie case reaches a satisfactory conclusion.
The post-verdict issue in Fahie’s case could be decided on the 7th of March when the court considers arguments from both sides of the case.
