Hurricane Beryl has intensified and strengthened to category 5 and is making its way rushing toward the Southeast Caribbean Islands. During such a catastrophe, the residents must take necessary steps to deal with and overcome the same, as the hurricane is expected to bring along flash floods and powerful winds.
Beryl has passed through the Windward Islands resulting in landfalls at Grenada’s Carriacouan Island. It brought down poles and power lines, roofs were torn off the houses. As a result, there were power outage throughout Grenada and people were shifted to shelters and necessary aids were given.
A natural disaster to hit a nation always carries along certain crisis and issues like discontinued transportation, load shedding, affected food supply, social connectivity, and many more. To tackle such mishaps, the citizens must take precautions accordingly. These preparations do help to ensure safety and minimize the damage and impact of the disaster.

Stay Informed
Follow the appropriate sources of information to stay up to date about the situation. Keep knowledge about the regions to be affected and make arrangements accordingly if the individual’s property falls in a flood-prone or high-risk area by moving to a safer site.

Food supplies in and around the region is greatly affected during the disasters. Availability of food commodities decreases during and after the storms. The residents must think about this situation and stock up food products that can be preserved and used for comparatively longer period. They also need to store enough drinking water to withstand the crisis. After the hurricane has passed, they would still need to boil the water atleast once before usage until the authorities claim the water supply to be safe.
Prepare your home
Secure the doors and windows if need with help of plywood or so to avoid injuries or any breakage. Secure automobiles or any other outdoor objects by placing them in a safer zone. Keeping the possibility of flood in mind, empty the basements if needed or elevate the objects that are most likely to be affected. Double check the electric wiring and turn off the gas supply if needed.
Power backup
In these situations, there is a high possibility of power outages that can last for quite a while. Necessary steps must be taken to tackle this issue. Use of power backups like generators and converters and such other appliances can be done.

Weather apps and relevant websites can help to stay updated on the hurricane. During floods there are cases of lost documentations that might be important, to avoid which digital back ups can be created. Refill gas or fuel as needed, as the gas stations and fuel pumps might not be functional for a while.
Although every precaution and safety measures cannot possibly be entitled in a single writing, the mentioned points can act as a basic plan to safeguard our homes and loved ones.
