Dr Armstrong Alexis to assume charge as CARICOM’s new Deputy Secretary-General

Castries, St Lucia: Dr Armstrong Alexis is appointed as the new Deputy Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Dr Alexis will assume his charge from today onwards. Dr Alexis hales from St Lucia. 

CARICOM authorities cited that, “Dr Alexis brings a wealth of experience to the organisation as he previously worked for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as the Commonwealth Secretariat and in the public service of St Lucia”.

Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community – (CARICOM) Dr Carla Barnett stated that she is gratified to have Dr Alexis as the new Deputy Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community of the organisation. 

In a statement, CARICOM’s Secretary-General cited that, “He is an experienced international public servant who brings a solid record of performance at a high level. The community and the secretariat will undoubtedly benefit from his skills and vast experience”.

“I am looking forward to him, joining the team at the secretariat as we continue to strive to provide effective & efficient service to the community”, following the statement she further noted. 

About CARICOM – 

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM or CC) is an intergovernmental organisation of – 15 member states (- 14 nation-states and one dependency) throughout the Caribbean having primary objectives to promote economic integration & cooperation among its members, to assure that the benefits of integration are equitably shared, and to coordinate foreign policy.

The organisation was established in the year of 1973. Its major activities involve coordinating economic policies & development planning, devising & instituting special projects for the less-developed nations within its jurisdiction, operating as a regional single market for many of its members (Caricom Single Market), and also handling regional trade disputes. The secretariat headquarters is in Georgetown, Guyana. CARICOM is an official United Nations Observer beneficiary. 

CARICOM was established by the English-speaking parts of the Caribbean and currently includes all the independent anglophone island countries plus Belize, Guyana and Montserrat, as well as all other British Caribbean territories and Bermuda as associate members. English was its sole working language into the 1990s.
