Dominica working to start private bubble tour for cruise-ship passengers

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit during December 12, 2021, Annou Pale episode invited the Minister for Tourism, International Transport and Maritime Initiatives – Denise Charles, to discuss the various developments, ongoing projects and milestones achieved by the ministry.

While discussing the recent inaugurated direct flight service from Miami to Dominica, Minister Charles noted that the COVID-19 pandemic put several projects on halt, but finally, the ministry was able to crack a deal with American Airlines to have access to a direct flight to Dominica.

This direct flight from Miami to Dominica would operate three times a week.

On being asked by PM Skerrit regarding how much the island is prepared for the commencement of this direct flight, Minister Charles stated, “even during the tough times of the outbreak, the Caribbean remains the safest travel place for the tourists, noting that this helped the ministry to build this partnership with the airlines,”

Further speaking on the impact of these direct flights on islands’ tourism department and local economy, Minister Charles stated this historic step would prove to be a significant game-changer.

With this, now Dominica is having direct connectivity to around 41 cities of the United States of America.

Besides this, the ministry is holding positive discussions with other international airlines such as – Delta, United and Canadian airlines to have a direct flight service to Dominica.

While in the Caribbean region, a direct flight from neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago commenced, contributing a major portion to Dominica’s economy.

She noted that the international airport, which is being in Dominica, would eventually aid in solving all the technical challenges the island country faces in airlines, attracting tourists and other airlines around the globe.

Minister Charles added that due to the increasing demand for cruise lines, the ministry is planning to start a private bubble tour for the travellers, regarding which the talks would commence by next week, which will provide boost to taxi drivers.

She outlined around 60% of the passengers arriving in Dominica are inoculated, adding that the ministry still encourages the stakeholders to get themselves vaccinated against the COVID. Minister Charles furthermore stated that this cruise season is going well and proves to be very active.

“We are also going to renovate the old market plaza, cruise village and restaurants in order to provide better and best facilities to our tourists,” Minister Charles cited.

Prime Minister highlighted that Douglas Charles airport has also been repainted and renovated, building a beautiful environment.

Asking the support of the general public, PM Skerrit outlined that this infrastructural development would surely transform to change the economic fortunes of Dominica.

“We are building Dominica into a dynamic nation bit by bit to secure a progressive economy and future for all citizens,” the prime minister noted.

PM Skerrit highlighted the construction of the international airport, noting that it will provide additional opportunities for direct travel from states around the world.

He then appreciated the efforts of the tourism minister Dennis Charles, the parliamentary secretary – Shakira Lockett, air access committee (comprises both public and private sector), organisation and several others.
