Dominica set to welcome last Creole Day of Month

Roseau, Dominica: Dominica is all set to welcome its last International Creole (kweyol) Day on October 28, 2023. Throughout the foregoing week, various island towns host many cultural events which will showcase the rich culture and heritage of Dominica.

The celebrations will take place at Windsor Park Sports Stadium, Bath Road, in Roseau.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) signified October 28 as International Creole Day.

Since 1983, this day has been celebrated to mark the Creole language and culture across the communities and countries sharing Creole. Dominica observed Jounen Kweyol on the last Friday in October.

This Celebration of French Creole Heritage has extended into a month of dance, cuisine, art, cultural expressions, food and music.

The event is a celebration of the diversity and richness of Dominican’s ethnic and artistic heritage and its culture with its theatrical, musical and other performances such as lectures and seminars.

The festival showcases a wide variety of street parties, art exhibitions, culinary experiences and many more.

Dominican World Creole Music Festival 2023

The event of the World Creole Music Festival was launched to promote the Dominican tourism product and create an excellent platform for native Dominican music. The World Creole Music Festival has become an esteemed leading event on the regional music gala calendar.

Every year, on the last day, Friday of October, hosts showcase the musical evening with Caribbean, French Antilles, African and North American musical voices.

Dominica’s annual World Creole Music Festival will be held for three nights, which feature the best in creole music across the world.

October is a month of Creole, which is the epicentre of culture for French Caribbean islands- Martinique and Guadeloupe and also those who were colonized at some time by the French- Dominica, Saint Lucia and Haiti.
