Dominica joins 153 countries in support of UN Resolution seeking ceasefire in Gaza

Dominica has joined 153 countries to vote in favour of a resolution at the United Nations (UN) and called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the war-torn region of Gaza.

Notably, the draft resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. The resolution was dispensed by Egypt with the support of 100 countries.

It is to be noted that the resolution was passed with 153 countries out of 193 which built the General Assembly.

However, The United States of America (USA) has used its Veto power against the resolution. The other countries that abstained from voting are the United Kingdom (UK), Italy, Germany and Ukraine.

The draft resolution was adopted by a huge majority. It is non-binding and takes no legal weight, but it demonstrates the views of the rest of the world regarding this ongoing conflict.

The Palestinian representative to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, stated that the vote marked “A historic day in terms of the powerful message that was sent from the General Assembly.”

Notably, the resolution initially did not particularly condemn Hamas for its ceasefire on Israel on October 7. In addition, efforts were made for the amendment to include the denunciation of Hamas, but it failed.

The elicit Israel’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, commented that the General Assembly was about to vote on another hypocritical resolution.

He further stated that the amendment failed to disclose the condemnation of Hamas for the crimes against humanity. This would only prolong the death and destruction in the region but only exhaustively elaborates what a ceasefire means.

Erdan added that Hamas is only focusing on destroying Israel, and it has also declared that it will repeat its atrocities again and again until Israel ceases to exist.

It is to be noted that the draft resolution also demanded the “Immediate and Unconditional release” of all the hostages as well as ensuring humanitarian access to the beleaguered enclave.

If sources are to be believed, it is said that Hamas took about 240 hostages when it attacked Israel and took them to the Gaza Strip.

Notably, 105 captives were released during a weeklong truce in late November, but it is believed that 138 hostages are still being held.

In addition to the ceasefire, the resolution expressed great concern over what it detailed as the ‘Catastrophic humanitarian situation’ in the Gaza Strip and the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
