Cold front leads to rising of sea level, shut down businesses in Jamaica

Kingston, Jamaica: The rising sea level due to the cold front resulted in the suspension of several businesses on the Montego Bay waterfront in St James throughout Tuesday. The rising sea level is associated with a cold front that is passing the island and bad weather in Jamaica. 

The current adverse weather conditions resulted in the collision of West End Road in Negril at Westmoreland, forcing rough sea waters to gush onto the roadway. A sea of debris was also visible on the road.

Due to such conditions, Jamaica Meteorological Services issued a Small Craft Warning yesterday in the marine conditions as the height of the waves exceeded nine (9) feet over the offshore areas. 

As per the weather reports, the winds in the sea swell are affecting the marine area, and it is possible that they might continue for the next 36 hours. The areas affected by the flood-like situation are Downtown, St James and Montego Bay. 

According to the reports, these conditions worsened the local businesses, such as the popular eatery Pier One, which was shut down due to the overflow of water. The shop is currently underwater in floodwater, which caused it to close. 

Even the road leading to Pier One and the surrounding businesses is flooded. The authorities urged people to avoid getting out of their premises and to prepare with basic necessities. 

Additionally, flooding can have a significant impact on small-scale businesses. Some of them are as follows, 

– Damage to the infrastructure

– Closing of business premises

– Loss of revenue and data

– Electricity shortage

– Loss of stocks and other materials

– Emotional distress

– Loss of valuable documents

The people across the affected areas in Jamaica took to their Facebook handles to express their concerns regarding the flood-like situations in the region. While reacting to the news, a person named Collington Green wrote, “Experiencing same conditions from around Wednesday right here in St Elizabeth.”

Another FB user, by the name of Shereene Cassup commented, “Well I was in St Mary for 8 days and a tell it wasn’t a joke at all right through the day it cold even d water that comes out d pipes is like ice water a just came bk to Clarendon yesterday evening.”

Moreover, people are experiencing the effects of a cold front, as the water feels as cold as ice, straight out of the fridge.
