Canada declares new policy to aid former international students

US & Canada: International students give over $21 billion annually to Canada’s economy and support continuity in its associations.

As has been the case in many other parts, coronavirus has presented a myriad of challenges for its international students. Most prominently, for many students of a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), the coronavirus pandemic’s disruption and possibility have jeopardized their opportunities of acquiring the work experience they need to implement for permanent residence (PR).

As part of the Government of Canada’s attempts to support international students through this pandemic time, the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship of Canada has declared that former international students who hold or held a PGWP will have the chance to apply for an open work permit.

Foreign nationals in Canada influenced by the pandemic with a departed or expiring PGWP will have a unique opportunity to apply for another open work permit. These will be valid for 18 months and will provide former international students to remain in Canada, proceed to seek employment, and build their future there.

The Canadian government has made important efforts to strengthen international students to settle enduringly in Canada, as they help create jobs and fill labor shortages. More than 58,000 graduates successfully implemented to immigrate permanently in 2019, and their choices to stay in Canada will help to approach its firm demographic challenges.

As Canada faces the pandemic’s second wave and outlines a course for recovery, enticing skilled immigrants is a central part of its strategy. This new policy will help more students fill holding needs in areas like health care, technology, and more.
