Jamaica: A daring armed robbery developed into the kidnapping of two supermarket operators in Spalding, Clarendon early Sunday afternoon.
From police reports, the attack happened at about three in the afternoon, when a group of armed men had gained entrance into the supermarket pretending to be ordinary customers. The men then turned their real intentions by brandishing firearms and demanding cash from the panicking staff and patrons.
The assailants took off with some unspecified amount of cash from the premises after declaring their demands. Issues turned up a bit worse as the gunmen kidnapped two Chinese businessmen, however, were released in the same community of Baillieston, Clarendon. The incident that followed the release has sent shivers down the spine through the area.
Since then, police have been on the lookout for those behind the outrageous robbery and abduction. Ever since then, the police have remained active to ensure they track any leads that would enable them to arrest suspects in this matter.
Area residents have reacted with anger and concern about the incident, asking for something to be done that will allow business owners and residents of the area some peace of mind. The very audacity of the crime has also stirred questions as to whether security measures, as currently implemented, are effective, and whether authorities should indeed exert more vigilance.
The incident underlines the sustained threat in store for business operators right across Jamaica, more particularly members of the Chinese community, who have been singled out to be victims in many high-profile crimes in recent times.
Police are asking persons with information about the robbery and abduction to assist them with their investigations. The manhunt is on, and the community remains nervous, just hoping against all odds that the case will come to a close and police will manage to bring to book whoever is behind this shocking crime.
The police have given assurance that they are working around the clock to ensure that the perpetrators face the full force of the law and normalcy returns to the area. For now, it’s only the recovery of the abducted businesspeople and their well-being, and that such an incident does not come to pass again.
