St Kitts and Nevis is on alert as a tropical storm is likely to hit the region.

Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: It is to be noted that Tropical Storm is likely to hit St Kitts and Nevis as of 5 a.m. This means that tropical conditions are possible to affect the region within the next 48 hours.

The residents are asked to monitor this system and be ready to activate their disaster plans if called upon. The centre of the Tropical Storm Tammy was found near latitude 13.5 North and Longitude 54.8 West. Tammy is active towards the west near 17mph, which is equal to 28km/h.

By tonight, a turn toward the west-northwest is forecasted, which will be followed by a turn towards the northwest on Friday night or Saturday.

As per the forecast track, the centre of Tammy is expected to move over or near the Leeward Islands by Friday and Saturday.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1006 mb, which is 29.71 inches.

Maximum sustained winds are forecasted to be around 40 mph, which is equal to 65km/h with the higher gusts and the minimum tropical storm force winds can extend outward up to 140 miles, i.e. 220 km from the centre.

Residents are urged to be secure and conscious for the next few days as the gradual strengthening is expected, and Tammy could be located near hurricane intensity by the end of the weekend.

An important message for Tammy can be detected in the Tropical Cyclone Discussion under AWIPS (Advance Weather Interactive Processing System).

Winds- Tropical Storm conditions are possible to hit within the watch area starting on Friday.
Rainfall- Tammy is Expected to fabricate storm total rainfall of 3-6 inches, with maximum amounts leading up to 10 inches everywhere on the portions of northern Windward into the Leeward Islands.

Rainfall total forecast of 1-2 inches with the maximum amounts leading up to 4 inches is expected for the U.S Virgin Islands and British into eastern Puerto Rico.

These rainfalls may result in urban flooding and isolated flash along with isolated mudslides in areas of higher terrain.
