Georgetown, Guyana: Vivekanand Ramroop, a 24-year-old and a labourer was jailed for 16 years for murdering a Coldingen fisherman.
On Thursday, he was sentenced to 16 years of imprisonment, and he was also previously held guilty of the capital offence of murder.
A 24-year-old was imposed the sentence by Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall when the matter was taken to the High Court in Demerara.
Notably, Ramroop, who identified as a labourer and formerly belonged to Lusignan in East Coast Demerara, admitted that in January 2020, he had murdered a 23-year-old fisherman named Mukesh Mangra.
Ramroop was represented by the defence attorney Donette Anthony, and in due course of time, the state was drawn by the following,
– Attorneys Delon Fraser
– Rbina Christmas
– Prosecutors
During the investigation, the body of Mangra, who was also known as “Paul” of Coldingen Squatting Area, was discovered on the evening of January 18, 2020.
The corpse was found on the road in his village with lacerations and two stab wounds; however, Ramroop and Mangra were strangers to one another.
Mangra was attacked by many men, including Ramroop, who stabbed him in his abdomen two times and the injured man was left bleeding on the roadway, which led him to his death.
Reportedly, a blue-handled knife was found almost 50 feet away from the body, whereas the reason for the attack on the now-dead man is still not found.
Last month, Ramroop’s co-accused, Roy Jaglall of Annandale, ECD, was declared freed of murdering Mangra after the jury found him unanimously not guilty as he was proven innocent on a murder charge.
Additionally, he was found not guilty by the 10-2 panel voting on the lesser charge of manslaughter.
There is a need to take strict action, and laws should be strictly followed as well in order to deal with such terrible cases.
Nowadays, crimes happen every single day, which risks the lives of the common people and is a threat to the nation and its citizens.
