Minister Melissa Skerrit hands over around 276 packages filled with essential supplies during back to school program
Melissa Poponne Skerrit, the wife of the Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, and the Minister of Housing, Land & Urban Development, hosted a Back-to-School Program for all the students ahead of the new academic year 2024-25.

Melissa Poponne Skerrit, the wife of the Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, and the Minister of Housing, Land & Urban Development, hosted a Back-to-School Program for all the students ahead of the new academic year 2024-25. She greeted all the students, hosted exciting activities, and delivered around 276 backpack packages filled with essential supplies for their new academic session.
This event took place on Saturday, August 31st, 2024, at Peebles Park in Roseau. While sharing glimpses of the annual back-to-school program, Minister Melissa Skerrit stated that she is extremely proud of Dominica’s beautiful young minds.
She called this program a source of support and hope for the children and parents of the country. She further asserted that she will always try her best to do her small part in helping them on making their journey to greatness.
Minister Melissa Skerrit also extended gratitude to all her team and supporters for the successful execution of this Back-to-School Program.
“As we come to the end of the summer vacation, I try my best to help where I can for our future generations’ upcoming academic year,” noted Minister Melissa Poponne Skerrit.
This program is conducted every year by the Melissa Skerrit Foundation which is an established charity operating in the Commonwealth of Dominica. Like every year, this year as well, Minister Melissa Skerrit distributed school bags and essential supplies.
During the program, the Minister also recognized the top National Assessment and CXC achievers, presented tuition scholarships and provided all the students a plethora of experience by offering an unforgettable entertainment and delicious snacks.
Minister Melissa Skerrit stated that it is her goal to help elevate the people of her country and to relieve their financial burdens so that they can live a life comfortably and happily.
She added that the education should be the shared responsibility and the successful development of a child depends upon all the cooperation of all the students, their parents, school administration and the community members.
Minister Melissa Skerrit called these students, the future of the country and promised to open doors to multiple opportunities for them. She remarked that there is a provision of yearly scholarships, school transfer grants, bursaries, free transportation, and additional support for teachers, principals, and the expansion of the curriculum to include technical and vocational subjects.
The Minister added that she is aiming to create a positive and productive learning environment for all the students.
“Have a successful and enlightening academic year to all of Dominica’s young scholars,” noted Minister Melissa Poponne Skerrit.
