Low pressure system to affect Trinidad and Tobago, TTMS reports

Port of Spain: The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Services (TTMS) issues an advisory due to the development of a low-pressure system, which is associated with the frontal system across the Leeward Islands.

Such conditions are expected to result in partly cloudy weather, along with some heavy showers or thunderstorms. This low-pressure system is expected to affect the regions of Trinidad and Tobago throughout this week.

As per TTMS, these weather conditions begin to affect the country from April 16-20, 2024.

“The low-pressure area developing northeast of the Lesser Antilles and the associated frontal system will continue to generate disturbances (troughs) over the Leeward Islands. This will lead to partly cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall at isolated places, and isolated heavy rainfall or thunderstorms are possible over the Leeward Islands during this forecast period”, Met officials said.

Continuing the statement, the TTMS meteorologist further said that, “Although Trinidad and Tobago and the Windward Islands will remain generally in a ridging pattern from Tuesday (16 April 2024) to Thursday (18 April 2024), patches of low-level convergence and moisture convection, interactions with local topography and daytime land heating, are expected to occasionally interrupt sunshine, leading to some light to moderate rainfall in isolated areas.”

During this time, the people of T&T may experience isolated heavy showers, especially in the hilly areas. Some regions are expected to observe cloudy periods with light to moderate showers.

The weather reports further mentioned that from Friday to Saturday, the troughs will move forward southward into Trinidad and Tobago and the windward islands.

This will enhance surface convergence and equatorial moisture build-up over the concerned regions. Deep convective activity will develop with some support from divergence in the upper atmosphere, partly cloudy skies, and light to moderate rainfall at isolated places, with isolated heavy rain or thundershowers possibly.

Due to continuous thunderstorms, there are high chances of street flooding or flash flooding in the vicinity of the isolated areas. During this time, the speed of the winds will increase by approximately 6,000 ft over the areas of T&T and the Windwards.

In addition, TTMS official have cautioned people to take precautionary measures as they noted a mild to moderate concentrations of the Saharan dust in the atmosphere. Especially on Wednesday, there are high chances for an increase in the dust concentration.
