Jamaica and Brazil signs MoU for sustainable tourism resilience

Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Brazil’s Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, and Maranhão’s Governor Carlos Brandao, bringing focus on strategic cooperation on a sustainable and resilient tourism model.

This key measure raises the bar of global tourism resilience, as the Global Tourism Resilience Centre (GTRC) recently inked the historic MoU in Sao Luis, Brazil.

From the provisions of the MOU, it seeks to solve problems occasioned by climate change, security threats, among other disruptions affecting tourism. Fundamental of these plans is the creation of a GTRC satellite center at the University of San Luis, which is to be officially inaugurated in September 2024, on the occasion of G20 Tourism Ministers’ meeting.

This centre will be instrumental in the generation of knowledge and solutions as far as tourism resilience is concerned for all the stakeholders.

Not only the Caribbean, but the world looks forward to sustainable development in the tourism sector. Minister Bartlett through his major tenet of sustainable tourism stating that resilience is now the critical component to attaining sustainability.

“As Minister Sabino and I will build this institution, one that provides stakeholders with the best information, the best ideas and the best innovation to overcome challenges.”

This four-year co-norming treaty is an affirmation of both Brazil and Jamaica as a country to strengthen each other’s destination, as well as strengthen the global tourism industry.

Leveraging on this structure and having its origin in Jamaica, the GTRC has been very instrumental in enhancing the tourism sector’s resilience in various prospects. The planned expansion to Brazil, a region that has a lush of natural and cultural endowment is a crucial landmark in this mission.

The MOU is crucial to reinforcing the tourist industry of Brazil and protecting its numerous and valuable resources made available by the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino. The partnership shall similarly advance the overall development of Maranhão, a region with fame for remarkable geo graphical features and study of customs, characteristics with approach to comforting sustainable tourism.

The tourism industry worldwide is still to overcome the effects of the recent pandemic and such alliances as the one between Brazil and Jamaica are important.

The MOU not only emphasizes on the potential of synergy of international cooperation but also paves the way to other similar efforts directed towards the establishment of a more stable and sustainable tourism industry in the world.
