Guyana: Three men charged and remanded for robbing 56-year-old man

Three men were arrested, charged and remanded to prison after robbing a 56-year-old contractor. It is to be noted that the robbery took place between 27 and 29 December 2023 at Lot 19 &20 Little and Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Guyana.

According to the sources, the trio has been identified as 18-year-old Daniel Bradford alias “Ratty” a resident of Lot 286 Frist Street Mochas East Bank Demerara, 18-year-old Jamel Richards and a resident of Lot V Block Herstelling East Bank Demerara and 19-year-old, Dizel Alves and a resident of Lot 2043 Block C Herstelling East Bank Demerara.

Three men robbed various items. The items include one green angle ginger valued at $60,000, one total compactor worth $298,000, two wheelbarrows valued at $28,000, one grill worth $15,000, one spray can valued at $8000, a car jack worth $10,000, three hammers valued at $15,000, one circle saw valued at $28,000 Guyana dollars.

The trio appeared at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate Court before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman, where the charges were read to him. The trio was charged with the offence of Simple Larceny contrary to Section 164 of the Criminal Act, Chapter 8:01.

Notably, the Administrative Justice Act was applied to the trio, and they all pleaded guilty to the offence they committed. The court, while rejecting their bail, sent them to serve their sentence until 19 January 2024.

The residents of the island nation have expressed their opinions in the case through their comments via Facebook. One person with a Facebook handle named “Young men don’t want to work. Full of energy to rob others who is working hard for living. Let them talk what they did with the stuff if they have it or who they sell it to and get the buyers behind bar.”

There is an urgent need for the Guyana Police Force to take stringent action in order to curb the rising crime rate. The increase in the number of crimes is directly affecting the safety and security of citizens.
