Guyana: Sean Thomas imprisoned for 4 years and fined for cannabis smuggling

Guyana: Sean Thomas alias Yankee has been sentenced to four years of imprisonment and fined GY$112,052,700 for the offence of possessing narcotics with the purpose of smuggling 123.85 of cannabis on Friday.

It is to be noted that the nation’s Customs and Anti-narcotics unit conducted an operation on 11th January 2023 within the surrounding area of Mandela Avenue, where they stopped a motor vehicle with a single occupant. Subsequently, the authorities conducted a search of the motor vehicle and found various parcels which were suspected to be cannabis.

During the process of investigation, the officers found the suspect being escorted to a house located in Eccles Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, Guyana. While conducting the search of the house, the authorities discovered several parcels of suspected cannabis, some of which were concealed in barrels.

As a consequence, 43-year-old Sean Thomas, resident of Lot 59 William Street, Kitty, Georgetown and 41-year-old Bulah London were arrested and taken to the headquarters of the Customs and Anti-narcotics unit.

On reaching there, the suspected cannabis was weighed by the authorities, and it weighed 123.85 hf with a street value of approximately GUY $37 million.

Therefore, Sean Thomas was presented before Magistrate S. Scarce at the Diamond Magistrates Court, where he was found guilty of two counts, which include,

  • Possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking to wit 121.831kgs and 2.672kgs of cannabis, respectively.

Therefore, he was imprisoned for four years for both offences, along with a fine of GY$112,052,700.

Various residents of the community also took to their social media accounts and expressed their views on the matter.

One person with a Facebook handle, Shelon Hurley Alexander, commented the following: “At least you trying doing you and not robbing and killing poor people for the little things they have.”

Another person commented, “Many crimes are increasing these days; people need to stop all this unless they give them harsh punishment.”
