Evin Lewis’ 94 runs and Gudakesh Motie’s 4 wicket haul secures West Indies victory against England

Evin Lewis’ smashing performance of 94 runs and impressive 4 wicket haul by Gudakesh Motie helped West Indies to victory against England in the first match of the ODI series. Following the heavy defeat in the rain-interrupted first match on Thursday night, the English players will be looking to recover in the 2nd ODI game which has been scheduled for today.
Notably, the first match of the three match ODI series was held on Thursday, 31st October at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium of Antigua and Barbuda. The match began with Windies winning the toss and deciding to bowl first.
The openers of the England team, Phil Salt and Will Jacks made a decent start but failed to make a major contribution to the game, scoring only 18 and 19 runs respectively. However, the middle order of the team including Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran showed some resistance and formed a 72-run partnership.
This partnership included the contribution of 48 runs from Liam Livingstone and 37 from Sam Curran. The duo not only helped the team boost its score but also gave a fighting chance to them, leading to a total of 209 runs with 10 wickets down in 45.1 overs.
The Windies bowler, Gudakesh Motie turned out to be the significant asset for the team and the star of the first inning. As, he claimed 4 crucial wickets, dismantling the line-up of England which also includes, Livingstone and Sam Curran.
After the interruption of the rain, when West Indies came to bat, the openers, Brandon King and Evin Lewis, made a decent start as they adjusted to the pitch. And, once the batters settled, Evin Lewis delivered an electrifying knock of 94 runs in just 69 balls, hitting 8 sixes and 5 fours.
During the batting of the West Indies, the rain once again interrupted the game which led to cut the game short to 35 overs with a target of 157 runs for West Indies. Following the dismissal of the openers, it got easy for Keacy Carty and Shai Hope to chase the game and win their first ODI match of the series against England.
The West Indies team put on their impressive performance after their recent 2-1 series defeat against Sri Lanka. The entire team showed resilience and momentum in both the innings which made it easy for them to win the match.
Following the game, Gudakesh Motie was declared the Player of the Match who stated that he tried to keep his game as simple as possible. He also stated that the practice session helped him a lot therefore, he was able to execute his plans successfully and accordingly.
