Eggleston Housing Project nears completion: Minister Melissa Skerrit

The Eggleston Housing Project is progressing rapidly towards completion and is aiming to hand over around 12 homes to the beneficiaries by the final month of the year 2024, stated the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Melissa Skerrit.

Recently, Minister Melissa Skerrit made her visit to the site to assess the progress made in the area with Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite, the Roseau South parliamentary representative.

While shedding light on the ongoing work on these houses, Minister Melissa Skerrit stated that this is the first housing project in the constituency of Eggleston. Therefore, the Parliamentary Representative has been making continuous and stringent efforts with the vision to provide beneficiaries with their own homes.

“A little peek into my visit to one of our latest housing projects. The Eggleston housing project is progressing rapidly towards completion,” noted Minister Melissa Poponne Skerrit.

Minister Melissa Skerrit noted that these houses will consist of 12 garden style homes, retaining walls, new road access with a vision to offer the beneficiaries with the breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea.

Along with that, these houses will also consist of horizon and ample backyard space for the families as well as a parking lot area in order to provide them access to all the facilities.

The Roseau South parliamentary representative, Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite stated that the construction of these houses will play a pivotal role in bringing the overall development to the constituency of Eggleston.

Notably, MMC Development Ltd had tapped seven local contractors in the Phase 1 of the Eggleston Housing Project to build 16 three-bedroom homes with features including, one master bedroom, two standard bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen, laundry area and much more.

While shedding light on these projects, the Roseau South Parliamentary, Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite stated that the construction of these houses will play a huge role in impacting the lives of the citizens of the area and will bring significant economic landscape.

“It is going to be a development whereby everybody will help and, be part and parcel of what is going on in the area,” noted Chekira Hypolite.

5000 Climate-resilient houses

The handing over of these 12 houses in December to the vulnerable families of the Eggleston constituency is a part of the Housing Revolution Programme of Dominica, which has been providing thousands of houses for people who suffered from climate disasters.

And, the progress in the construction of these houses marks the unwavering commitment of the government of Dominica towards providing 5000 climate resilient homes to the families who lost their homes due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria 2017.

These houses are funded with the CBI reserves. As per the details, the authorities have till now distributed over 1500 homes to the families affected by Hurricane Maria. The authorities have expressed their desire and outlined the significance of creating climate-resilient homes with a vision to ensure the well being and safety of all its citizens in the face of environmental challenges.
