3 cases of Delta variant of COVID-19 virus has been reported in St Vincent and Grenadines. The authorities from health sectors said that they have been preparing to tackle the third wave of COVID-19 that has been considered more transmissible.

According to the fresh reports regarding COVID-19 updation, the country registered 35 active cases, and 12 people died due to the virus. The island had recorded 2,348 COVID-19 cases from March 2020 till the present. Out of the total confirmed cases, 2,301 COVID-19 cases were recovered in St Vincent and Grenadines.

Medical Officer of Health, Dr Roger Duncan, while addressing a conference said that he knows the Delta variant is more transmissible, so they have been preparing to handle the increasing cases of the further.

Dr Duncan said, “More people infected, the more people likely to get sick, the more people like to get severely sick. And deaths could go up. I mean, the evidence is before us; it’s clear, unambiguous and overwhelming.”

Dr Duncan, while talking about the 24 hrs delivery of the test report of the RT-PCR test, said that they had noticed. At the same time, they did releases regarding the Delta cases. So we’ve been building our capacity to test an increase in the turnaround time. Our contact tracing, monitoring had improved. And that’s why they had been detecting those cases, those imported cases of Delta variant.

Dr Duncan said that they had a plan for emergency care at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital and at community and rural hospitals both, that would see some difference from the regular daily routine as they choose another mode, depending on what the caseloads were, whenever they encounter a rapid community spread of the Delta variant.

Dr Ducan told the reporters that the government has the ability to keep the numbers of COVID-19 cases low without imposing curfews and other lockdown measures.
