27-year-old man granted bail in sum of $100,000 for robbing police officer at knifepoint

Georgetown, Guyana: A 27-year-old man was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 in connection to the offence of robbing a police officer at knifepoint. He has been asked to reappear in the court on 29th April 2024.

The suspect has been identified as Jomal Jeriah of Charlotte Street, Georgetown. As per the reports shared by the officers, the suspect allegedly attacked the police constable as he armed himself with a knife and subsequently robbed him. 

The items robbed by the suspect include a Samsung mobile phone worth $40,000 and $20,000 in cash. The entire incident of the robbery was recorded on CCTV footage which was used as proof against him. 

Following the incident, he was arrested for the offence he committed and was taken to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He was presented before Senior Magistrate Clive Nurse where the magistrate denied the charges and granted him bail. The bail was given to him under the fulfilment of certain conditions, such as that he had to pay an amount of $100,000. 

The case of Jeriah was represented by Attorney-at-Law Domnick Bess and has been asked to reappear in the court on 29th April 2024. Several residents of the community took to their social media accounts and expressed their views and opinions on the incident. They called out the judicial system and raised their concern over policemen not being safe in the nation. 

One person with a Facebook handle Shem Ross commented “The justice system is terrible if the police getting robbed and the criminal getting bail. Tourists take note the police is not even safe.”

Another person commented the following “You give them bail to come back and do the same thing a criminal needs to spend some time in jail.”

The residents of the community have also urged the administration to take stringent measures with the motive to reduce the increasing crime rate in the nation. The administration has also ensured that they are implementing strict policies in order to bring prosperity to the nation
