Bridgetown, Barbados: The flash flood watch has been issued for Barbados, which went into effect on Friday. The watch will continue until 6 am, Saturday, December 9, 2023.
It is to be noted that a trough system is currently affecting the island, and it will likely generate moderate to heavy showers from the night of December 8 to the next morning.
Notably, rainfall accumulations of one inch have already been recorded across the island today. Moreover, there is an expectation of additional accumulations of one to two inches to persist during the night.
However, there is a possibility of floods to occur as a street flood watch is issued when excessive rainfall could result in flash flooding within the watch areas in a short period of time (generally less than six hours).
Key Message
– Runoff from higher elevations
– Water settlements on roads and fields at the foot of hills and coastal roads
– Soil erosion on exposed scarred land surfaces
– Objects or debris from higher elevations becoming embedded within fast-moving water flows
– Adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies such as ponds
– Delays on traffic routes with some roads becoming impassable inside and out of minor towns
– Residents and visitors should also be aware that this alert level could elevate to red
Additionally, there is a moderate risk of snowfall; expect most of it to fall on high and moderate-risk days. However, these are not rain/snow forecasts but weak spots in the month which would more easily allow passage of a storm through the area.
Barbados’ weather in December is a transition month between the rainy season and the dry season. The risk of rain is moderate. However, 70% of the days in the period have a higher risk.
