Trinidad and Tobago: Saharan Dust reduces air quality, MoH releases preventive measures

Trinidad and Tobago:  The Saharan dust, carried by winds from the Sahara Desert in North Africa, has engulfed countries from Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago in the South to Barbados and Saint Lucia in the East. Considering its adverse effects on health, the health Ministry shared the information to raise its awareness among the public.

The Ministry highlighted that high levels of Saharan Dust may exacerbate illness in persons at high risk of respiratory complications including, persons with pre-existing lung conditions such as asthma and the persons with pre-existing heart disease. The elderly and children are also at the risk.

“Those with pre-existing conditions should stay indoors, when possible, and should have their rescue inhaler with them at all times,” shared the ministry for the general public so they are on a safer side.

Also, it mentioned that persons should seek medical attention if they experience severe conditions, be it difficulty in breathing, persistent fever for over two to three days or a severe worsening of a pre-existing condition.

The High levels of Saharan Dust may cause dry cough, sore throat, itchy and watery eyes, sneezing and a runny nose. Connecting to it, the ministry mentioned, “While persons may experience symptoms during the days of a Saharan Dust event, these symptoms should disappear as the dust level reduces.”

Moreover, it appealed to the citizens to stay indoors to reduce the symptoms that may occur during Saharan Dust surges. People should consider wearing a face mask to protect oneself from dust particles.

Considerably, the advisory has also been issued in the country associated with the health and safety risks. In the advisory, it was mentioned that Air quality is reduced, the groups should take necessary precautions.

The Health ministry of the country keeping in mind the advisory shared the precautions that can be taken to foster better health among the citizens.
