Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister of the Twin-Island Federation, Dr Terrance Drew, is scheduled to meet Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States of America. As per the official government update, both leaders will meet at the US-Caribbean Leaders Meeting in the Bahamas on June 8, 2023 (Thursday).

PM Terrance Drew will be accompanied by other Caribbean leaders and Prime Ministers of the Caribbean region next week. The meeting will be co-hosted by the Vice President of the United States and the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Philip Davis, who is the current chairperson of CARICOM – the Caribbean Community.

The update regarding the meeting was shared by the US Embassy in the Bahamas. This meeting is a follow-up meet on the Vice President’s previous meetings with Caribbean leaders in April 2022, followed by the Summit of Americas in Los Angeles in June 2022 and in September 2022.

It is worth noting that this trip of Vice President Kamala Harris showcases the commitment of the Biden-Harris administration towards the Caribbean region and its development and growth. This meeting will also recognise the common bonds and interests between both nations.

According to the official update, various regional issues will be addressed during this meeting between the leaders of the Caribbean and the USA. One of the major issues will be the climate crisis and initiatives to be taken by the small island states to build a climate-resilient nation. The leaders will also interact about ways to increase energy security via clean energy.

The US Embassy in the Bahamas has also informed that this meeting will be organised under the US-Caribbean Partnership to address the Climate Crisis 2030. This initiative was collectively launched by the Vice President and the Caribbean leaders during the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles.

Moreover, this official trip of US Vice President Harris has been scheduled during the observance of Caribbean-American Heritage Month, which marks the longstanding bilateral tie between both – the USA and the Caribbean.
