PM Terrance Drew discusses maritime crisis on sidelines of CARICOM meeting

The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew and the other present delegations of the nation held important discussions with the representative from the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation.

The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew and the other present delegations of the nation held important discussions with the representative from the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation.

The meeting was conducted with a vision to protect the oceanic ecosystems of the nation by implementing measures to tackle the environmental challenges.

Both parties exchanged dialogues on the sidelines of the 46th Regular meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation is a significant initiative that plays a crucial role in creating sustainable economic development among Atlantic coastal countries. It also fosters cooperation and interaction among science and technology sectors with a spirit of inclusivity, trust, mutual understanding, and respect. Along with that, it also helps in overcoming all the obstacles of maritime law enforcement and governance.

The Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation were represented by various delegations which included, Ambassador Jessye Lapenn, the inaugural Senior Coordinator for Atlantic Cooperation; Laura Lochman, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Diplomacy in the Bureau of Energy Resources; and Barbara A Feinstein, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Caribbean Affairs and Haiti Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.

Meanwhile, the authorities who attended the meeting from St Kitts and Nevis include the Head of Services, Thelma Richard and the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Naeemah Hazelle.

During the meeting, PM Terrance Drew shed light on several environmental issues being faced by the nation. He outlined the need to address the maritime crisis by safeguarding oceanic ecosystems, promoting renewable energy solutions and overcoming the challenges being faced by Haiti.

PM Terrance Drew talked about the sargassum which is affecting the beaches of the island nation. He highlighted the importance of preserving and protecting oceans with the motive to welcome the maximum number of tourists to the nation, ensuring them a safe and secure environment.

While shedding light on the cooperation, PM Drew asserted “This type of cooperation would be a vehicle to achieve what we have not been able to achieve before. We are ocean states, so this partnership is very important for us to prevent our seas from being exploited.”

He also mentioned the renewable energy initiative which will provide numerous benefits to the citizens of St Kitts and Nevis.

Moreover, PM Terrance Drew is attending the 46th CARICOM meeting which is taking place in Guyana. The meeting is being attended by many Caribbean leaders, who will exchange dialogues for enhancing the development of the CARICOM region.
