Roseau, Dominica: The Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit was broadcasted live on Kairi’s Heng local radio show on Friday, where the Prime Minister outlined the workings of the ongoing projects in the country for its development.
While discussing about the works under progress in the country, he mentioned that the officials have been working diligently for the construction of the International Airport. More than 300 Dominicans have secured direct employment on the construction site, and the demand for additional workers continues.
“The number keeps increasing and they’re still looking for additional workmen and work women,” said the PM Roosevelt Skerrit while extending his words.
He also expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing work and said that the airport runway will surely be appreciated by the end of 2024. Moreover, he added that the authorities are happy that they are able to make the payments for the amount being expended on all the projects.
PM Skerrit also added that employment is not just made directly but indirectly jobs through the purchase of various items, including cement, construction materials, agriculture, food items and diesel. In simple words, the benefits are being offered to all these bodies from the international airport project.
Further, he added that the country needs to purchase cement to the extent of 20 million US dollars to mix with the soil for compacting. This is because of the nature of the soil, as it has a lot of moisture.
“Now, you can imagine how much cement we will need for the construction of the runway, construction of the buildings, and all that as just of compacting, we have to spend an excess of 20 million US Dollars,” said PM Skerrit.
Adding to it, he expressed his joy by mentioning that the country is becoming able to make the payments. And, even has started making payments to the ones who were displaced from the construction site. Significantly, the amount of $15 million has already been disbursed this week.
Not only this, while speaking at the radio show, he also highlighted the expansion of Douglas Charles Airport. A significant amount is being invested for the same. Even the authorities are working towards actively addressing issues like sustaining American Airlines because of certain issues, such as difficulties landing during rainy weather.
