Noreen Alfred, 21 years old from St Ignatius Village in Region 9 has emerged as the new Miss Amerindian Heritage 2024-2026. This grand celebration forms part of Guyana’s annual Amerindian Heritage Month celebrations in advancing the rich culture and contributions of indigenous communities all over the country.
The pageant focuses on providing considerable focus on the talents, beauty and rich knowledge of young indigenous women from Guyana’s various regions.
Noreen Alfred stood out by her platform, focussing on the “Empowerment of Indigenous Youths”, a cause in which she has always been deeply committed during the course of her journey.
This does reflect to the younger generation her desires of education, leadership and community service. And her victory testifies to her academic success, professional experiences and passion for community involvement.
Noreen Alfred’s journey to the Miss Amerindian Heritage crown had started off with a strong foundation in education. She emerged as one of the very brilliant students, earning herself a prestigious hinterland scholarship from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
This, in turn, made her to accomplish the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) certificate, with flying colours as such to have secured a distinction.
After that, Noreen went back to her home region after school and worked as a Customer Sales Representative at Lethem Power Company Incorporated. During this job, she imparted very good communication and customer service skills which eventually prepared her for leadership positions.
Currently, Noreen Alfred receives the Government of Guyana’s GOAL scholarship which has allocated her the study of Bachelor’s in Engineering and Project Management. Her academics will support her passion for problem-solving and sustainable development within areas that can benefit her indigenous community.
Outside her work and academic life, Noreen Alfred is involved with organizations such as the Civil Defense Commission and the Guyana Red Cross Society on volunteer work. Being part of these initiatives, such as disaster relief operations, showcases her desire to give back to the community.
Apart from the social work, Noreen Alfred has also been able to obtain technical skills in the use of solar power, information technology, and construction through some training by the Board of Industrial Training.
These certificates indicate her commitment to diverse learning in various fields and, more so, is to meaningfully contribute to any technical or infrastructural development of her region.
Noreen Alfred, Miss Amerindian Heritage, not only has the title of being an ambassador for Guyana’s indigenous communities but also a role model for Indigenous youths from all corners of the country, portraying perseverance, academic excellence, and community service.
