World Environment Day: Barbados PM Mia Mottley pledges to reduce plastic usage

Bridgetown, Barbados: Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, wished the general public on the occasion of World Environment Day 2023. While wishing, she noted that this year everyone should pledge to reduce the usage of plastic, leading towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

PM Mottley also asked the public to contribute towards Mission Barbados, making the country a perfect place to live.

“Happy World Environment Day! Together, let us #BeatPlasticPollution, but more importantly, let us continue to champion the Sustainable Development Goals, continue the path to Mission Barbados, and create the best environment for all calling Barbados home,” the tweet by PM Mia Mottley read.

The country celebrated the day, with the world, on June 5, 2023. Many events were hosted in schools. Students wore colours to represent various themes of the environment and climate change.

The highlights from the celebrations of the day were shared by St. Gabriel’s School – Barbados. The school mentioned that they were proud to welcome Mrs Lynda Browne-Bristov from the Barbados Sea Turtle Project, who taught the students about how climate change can affect our shores and aquatic life, with a focus on Barbados’ sea turtles.

Parents also participated in the event and heard all about these amazing creatures and how to protect them.

The collective surprise and gasps the students gave when they realized the hawksbill’s shell was almost taller than Mrs Steel until they saw pictures of a leatherback turtle – the largest reptile in the world, which can get as big as a small car!

During the event, teachers gave a cheer to some of the ways which will assist in climate protection. The ways stated during the celebrations are:

• Car Pool
• Conserve Water
• Use Energy Efficient Lightbulbs
• Eat sustainable seafood
