St Lucia: St Lucia commemorates National Library Week 2022 under “Connect with Your Library.” National Library Week is observed annually in the first week of April (from April 4 to April 8, 2022). It celebrates the nation’s libraries and the contributions of library workers’ contributions and ultimately seeks to promote library use and support.
The official opening ceremony was held at the Central Library in Castries, collaborating with the Hunter J. Francois Library at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. A special tribute was made to Mr Hunter J. Francois, who served as the Minister for Education from 1964 to 1974 and was instrumental in the establishment of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. The Hunter J. François Library at the college is named in his honour; his family was present to receive the token.
There are several activities planned to observe the week. April 5 marks National Library Workers Day, which honours the contributions of library workers. Outreach events will be held on April 6, including a registration drive and an interactive reading session. On April 7, a report will be compiled to update the status of libraries in St Lucia, and an Author’s Exhibition will be held on April 8.
The public is encouraged to visit their respective community libraries and make use of the resources available.
The authorities would also commemorate World Health Day on April 7 (Thursday). In 2022, the day will be marked under “Our Planet, Our Health”. This theme has been selected because the world is facing a pandemic, pollution, and an increased incidence of diseases. This call from PAHO, the WHO, and partners, presents a unique opportunity for a green and healthy recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that puts the health of individuals and the planet at the centre of actions and fosters a movement to create societies focused on well-being.
