Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: Department of Marine Resources of St Kitts and Nevis has shared the importance and significance of one of the essential natural resources – Water on the occasion of World Water Day. World Water Day is an international observance held annually on March 22, every year, since its inception in 1993.
The Department took it to social media and expressed its views on its worth. The post read, “Water is the foundation of all life, but clean water is especially essential in seafood production methods like aquaculture since fish are totally dependent upon water to breathe, feed, grow, excrete wastes and reproduce.”
Furthermore, it appealed to the general public to contribute to saving and preserving water. “Do your part each day to highlight the importance of freshwater as well as advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources,” the post by the Department further read.
It is worth mentioning that it is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of water, the global water crisis, and the need for sustainable water management. On this day, people all across the globe come together to celebrate water and learn about the critical issues surrounding it.
Water is one of the essential resources on the planet. It is essential for life, and access to clean water is a basic human right. Unfortunately, millions of people still lack access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation. According to the WHO, over 2 billion people globally lack access to safe drinking water and over 4 billion lack access to basic sanitation services. The situation is even more alarming in developing countries, where water scarcity is a significant challenge, affecting health, education, and economic development.
World Water Day 2023 is observed under the theme “Valuing Water,” which highlights the essential role water plays in every aspect of people’s lives. Water is crucial for agriculture, industry, energy, and health, and its value extends beyond economic benefits. Water also has cultural and spiritual significance for many communities around the world. Therefore, it is crucial to recognize the multiple dimensions of water and the need to integrate them into policies and practices that promote sustainable water management.
