Antigua and Barbuda: With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 approaching in the month of June, Antigua and Barbuda is preparing in full swing to host a series of matches at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium and generate thrill among cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
Recently, the cabinet has received the progress report that has been shared by the Ministry of Education, Sports and the Creative Industries and from the Executive Chairman of the National Housing regarding the renovation of the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The stadium holds the capacity to cater to around 10,000 people, which can be increased if required, as previously done during the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Sir Vivian Richards Stadium is the cricket stadium built in Antigua and Barbuda. It promotes its rich cricketing heritage and has become a premier destination for cricket enthusiasts from around the globe. So as to continue providing the cricket lovers with the best facilities the Ministry is working relentlessly by undertaking beautification projects.
A team was designated to manage all the tasks, firstly the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium’s outside walls needed to be re-painted. For which the required material has been sourced without any delay.
Further, the cabinet ordered the completion of the ongoing repair work at the swimming pool, also described as the world’s first Leap Year Beach ‘Beach 366’, which is at Sir Vivan Richards stadium and was launched in March. The strategic move behind the Beach 366 underlines the commitment of the island towards sports and celebration, offering both leap year babies and cricket fans a new venue to enjoy unforgettable moments.
Colin C. James, CEO, Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority invited cricket lovers warmly and enjoy at Beach 366 during the Cricket World Cup. He said the beach is more than just an addition to the already existing beaches. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be a celebration of community and cricket. Colin extended an invitation to cricket fans, leap year babies and travellers from all walks of life.
Other than the beautification work, the team assigned is also looking for additional staff including cleaning staff, plumbers, electricians and Air Conditioning technicians during the month the T20 matches will be played. Also, the requirement of 1875 KVA standby generator was raised by the team, to which the Cabinet promptly agreed and purchased the same.
The cabinet is also looking into providing 24-hour surveillance in the stadium by allocating security personnel for the safety of the equipment, the guests and to avoid any sort of disruption. They have decided to give charge of security to 200 Antiguans who are willing to volunteer and take care of the safety of the visitors at the stadium.
Hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 will positively impact the economy of Antigua and Barbuda and also contribute to job creation for the residents of the nation. The ongoing infrastructural development will help leave an everlasting positive impact on the minds of the visitors.
Sir Vivian Richards Stadium will host 8 cricket matches for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 from 9 June to 23 June.
