Saint Lucia: The Saint Lucia National Archives Authority (SLNAA) paid homage to two of the nation’s sports luminaries as part of this year’s Nobel Laureate Festival.
The National Archives, headquartered at Vigie, Castries, will mount an exhibition to be opened on Monday, January 23, 2023, according to national archivist/CEO of the National Archives Authority, Margot Thomas. She called the period when the festival is celebrated as a “season of inspiration” in presenting the National Archives’ plan to celebrate Daren Sammy and Levern Spencer.
“We are overjoyed to share with you our offering for 2023”, she told the gathering at the launching earlier this month. “The exhibition, which will be opened to the public until March 31, 2023, will showcase the lives of our internationally acclaimed Laverne Spencer and Daren Sammy. It will focus on the rise of these two young Saint Lucians who both came from humble beginnings, were reared in rural communities and through determination, hard work and perseverance rose to prominence on the world stage in their chosen sports of High Jump and Cricket”, noted Thomas.
The exhibition will highlight various aspects of these two leading Saint Lucian sports personalities through newspaper clippings, and other artefacts, and will revolve around seven (7) sub-themes listed below:
1. Childhood and Youth
2. Discovering and Pursuing the Dream
3. Surviving Obstacles and Challenges
4. Mentors and Sponsors
5. Spirituality and Sustenance
6. Medals, Trophies and Awards
7. Future Endeavors
Thomas stressed, “We need to inspire our young people to aim higher to succeed in their chosen fields despite the challenges they may face”. The Theme for this exhibition is: “Celebrating Excellence: Fulfilling the Destiny, Winning International Acclaim.”
