Castries, Saint Lucia: The Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Wellness of Saint Lucia assured to officially host the World Tourism Week 2023. The Ministry has asked the general public of the island nation to participate in this event, showcasing their support towards sustainability.
It also outlined that these week-long celebrations will act as a catalyst for the movement towards achieving a sustainable future of tourism for all the Saint Lucians.
The Ministry of Tourism, Investment, Creative Industries, Culture and Information has ensured that this year’s World Tourism Day will be celebrated with many cultural events. It outlined that the schedule of the same will be officially announced.
As per the Ministry, the celebrations will commence on September 24, 2023 and will be concluded on September 30.
These celebrations will be a platform for various private as well as public partners of the tourism sector of Saint Lucia.
The World Tourism Day:
The global community celebrates World Tourism Day on September 27 every year. The day has been designated by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). According to the organising authority, this year (in 2023), the day will be celebrated under the theme “Tourism and Green Investments,” giving importance to tourism development.
Through this theme, the UNWTO has also emphasised the importance of Green Investment as one of the key priorities for future growth and recovery. It also underlined that such investments also contribute towards the tourism sector.
In addition to this, the United Nations WTO has also highlighted that a more focused approach is required towards traditional and non-traditional investments. The organisation claimed that this would open gates to more opportunities in tourism, increasing and fulfilling the potential of the sector for people.
It will also build resiliency, accelerate climate action, foster greater sustainability, innovation and technology, enhance education and skills, deliver inclusive prosperity through entrepreneurship and bolster green transformation (transforming business practices to accelerate growth).
It is to be noted that this Day holds immense significance for the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as tourism is one of the important sectors. It has been anticipated that the day will assist in raising awareness regarding the sustainable, eco- and greener future.
