Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: The Carnival Institute of Trinidad and Tobago, also known as Carnival Institute and Regional Carnival, has recently shared information about the music of Calypso legend Carlton Joseph.
The update was shared by the public through Feature Friday. It mentioned, “We highlight the music of Calypso legend Carlton Joseph (1932 – 2005), more popularly known by his sobriquet, “Warlord Blakie.” In a 2005 article titled, “Lord Blake – Farewell to the Warlord,” from an online Issue of Caribbean Beat Magazine, Blakie was described by fellow calypsonian David Rudder as being “a street-smart urban warlord” and “one of the original rude bwoys.” Blakie earned his title as the “Warlord.” He feared no one and, with his distinctive laugh, took on all comers – including the Mighty Sparrow.”
Furthermore, it outlined that the year 1964 presented a good crop of Calypsonians who were vying for the title of Calypso King. They were Lord Kitchener, Mighty Bomber, Nap Hepburn, Lord Blakie, Mighty Composer, Young Killer, and the defending champion, Mighty Sparrow. In the tight battle for the crown, the Mighty Bomber proved to be the winner with his two songs, “Tribute to Spoiler” and “Joan and James,” Bomber had done the unimaginable and beaten both Kitchener and Sparrow.
The Carnival Institute of Trinidad and Tobago also stated that Blakie, in turn, lets loose a piece of picong on Sparrow in the song with “Sparrow Lost.” In the calypso, he brazenly pokes fun at Sparrow’s loss and, in his own words regarding the crown, “You know they take it from one Grenadian and put it on the next one head.”
In conclusion, CIRC also shared a song by the legendary music artist. The link to the video shared is as follows – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neVP-vOWuE8.
