Queen will not attend ‘COP26’ climate change summit following medical rest

Following medical advice to take a rest, Queen will not attend the ‘COP26’ climate change summit in Glasgow. Previous Wednesday, Queen went underwent preliminary medical checks in hospital. 

Queen Elizabeth II earlier also cancelled her visit to Northern Ireland amid her medical conditions. She resumed public engagements on Tuesday, meeting ambassadors through a video link from Windsor Castle.

Buckingham Palace noted that she “regretfully” chose not to attend a reception at the summit, adding that she would deliver her address to delegates using a recorded video message instead.  

‘COP26’ conference – 

The “2021 – United Nations Climate Change Conference”, also recognised as COP26 and the – Glasgow Conference, is the ’26th United Nations Climate Change Conference’.

Conference is scheduled to be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, the United Kingdom, between 31 October and 12 November 2021, under – the co-presidency of the United Kingdom and Italy. 

The conference is the – 26th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change & the third meeting of the parties to the Paris Agreement. 

This conference is the first time ever that parties are expected to commit to enhanced ambition since ‘COP21’. Parties are needed to carry out every five years, as highlighted in the Paris Agreement, a process colloquially known as the ‘ratchet mechanism’. 

The venue for the conference is the – SEC Centre in Glasgow. It was initially due to be held in – November 2020 at the same venue, the event was postponed for 12 months due to the ‘COVID-19 pandemic’ in Scotland. 

The US President – Joe Biden, Turkish President – Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, climate activist – Greta Thunberg, Canadian Prime Minister – Justin Trudeau and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will also join the conference. 

In preparation for the summit, Councils in and around Glasgow have pledged to plant 18 million trees. The Clyde Climate Forest – (CCF) is projected to increase tree coverage in the urban areas of the Greater Glasgow region to 20 per cent.
