PM Harris says St Kitts and Nevis is “on the right track to recover”

Prime Minister – Dr Timothy Harris, during his address in a monthly press conference, stated that as per the statistics, the island is “on the right track for recovery” as there is an increase in the out-turns of the main sectors.

St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister – Dr Timothy Harris, during his address in a monthly press conference, stated that as per the statistics, the island is “on the right track for recovery” as there is an increase in the out-turns of the main sectors.

He cited that agriculture and Fisheries sub-sectors have displayed a great rise in the output, noting that in the sectors, crop output has increased by 15 per cent, totalling 1.9 million pounds for the time period January to September 2021 compared to the same period in 2020.

The Livestock production reported – 165,800 pounds, which is up by nine% over the comparable period of 2020. The fisheries sector has seen a 15 % increase in the outcome as compared to the previous year.

Following the statement, he added, “This year has been a relatively better year for our farmers and fishers. They benefited from lower costs for their inputs on account of our stimulus package. New initiatives such as the night market have resulted in increased incomes for all. Lobster fishery has shown a significant increase, recording a 135 per cent year over year increase”.

The Caribbean island recorded 1,301 fishers at this point, while last year, the toll of the registered Fisherfolk was till – 1,235.

Prime Minister highlighted, “The Government has provided good support to our fishers on their procurement of inputs such as fishing wire, fishing rope, etc.”.

“I want to call on Fisherfolk, farmers and indeed every self-employed person to register as self-employed individuals with the Social Security Board. By doing so, you will help to protect yourself against future adversities and secure a pension; this is without a doubt a step towards securing a stronger, safer future for yourself”.

He further stated that the manufacturing sector continues to be the main contributor to the financial development of St Kitts and Nevis.
