St Kitts and Nevis: The bicentennial of the Cottle Church will be celebrated on May 5, 2024. The day being celebrated in the country holds great importance. The first service of the church was celebrated on May 5, 1824 and this year, as it will complete its 200 years of existence, the celebration would mark a special note.
Cottle Church was the first church in the Caribbean that allowed enslaved and free, blacks and whites, master and enslaved to worship together. The construction for the church started in 1822, and was completed after the sugar cane crop of 1824.
The church was built by the enslaved of Round Hill Estate, however it was owned by the Cottle family. This monument of Nevis’ heritage is one of the beautiful attractions of the country. The builders who made the church were so skilled that they hand cut every stone and placed them symmetrically to produce a proper sound structure.
The church is built with such strong material that even after being worn by long exposure to the atmosphere, it has been through earthquakes and hurricanes. Still, the building is fine and holds an aesthetic appeal.
Cottle Church is being taken care of by the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society (NHCS). And, this beautiful and historical site brings about all the perfect vibes to the couples who are planning for their wedding.
It is the perfect place when it comes to the destination wedding. The Nevis Tourism Authority once even mentioned the place, “this charming gem provides the perfect backdrop for a magical wedding ceremony.”
As it is the first church in the Caribbean where black and white people can Worship the God, makes it the best place to bring out the essence of oneness from the beautiful place. It has even been considered the perfect place to plan the destination wedding.
