Minister Sonia Parag to head Local Government from this week
The Minister of Public Service, Sonia Parag, will head the Ministry of Local Government starting this week. The President made this announcement via live broadcast on January 2, 2024.

Georgetown, Guyana: The Minister of Public Service, Sonia Parag, will head the Ministry of Local Government starting this week. The President made this announcement via live broadcast on January 2, 2024.
During the announcement, President Ali stated, “As we work towards faster implementation, I am pleased to announce today that the Ministry of Local Government will see Minister Sonia Parag taking up responsibility there, joining Minister Anand Persaud. Minister Parag will now move from the Public Service Ministry to the Local Government Ministry.”
Notably, the former Minister of the Local Government, Nigel Dharamlall, resigned from his post in July last year, and as a result, the appointment of Parag came as a solution.
It is to be added in the remarks of the head of the state that this transition will take place during the course of this week. It will be held under Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh in the office of the President.
Noting this, President Ali has given a detailed explanation that his government features a very robust community-oriented programme at the level of the Ministry of Local Government.
Further, the government will be moving full steam ahead with implementing its projects and programmes.
He further stated that those programmes and projects will be implemented at the level of Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs), Regional Democratic Councils (EDCs) and municipalities, with a focus on empowering local governance structures.
“We are looking to empower the local governance structures more and more as we roll out the benefits to our people”, President Ali stated, adding that in the coming days, Guyanese can expect to hear more from him on some of the initiatives that will be undertaken in 2024.
