Former PM Abe was assassinated on July 8, 2022 (Friday), on the street of western Japan by a gunman who fired him from behind. The act has stunned not only the nation but also the world with some of the strictest gun control laws anywhere.
The longest-serving leader, 67-year-old Abe, was collapsed bleeding and was rapidly airlifted to the nearby hospital in Nara. While reaching the hospital, he wasn’t breathing and his heart stopped. As per the officials, within some time, he was pronounced dead as he received massive blood transfusions.
Hidetada Fukushima, the chief of the Nara Medical University emergency department, stated that Abe suffered major heart damage and two neck wounds that damaged an artery.
The police officers who visited the shooting scene have arrested Tetsuya Yamagami, 41-year-old, a former member of Japan’s navy – a suspect of murder. Police have informed that he used a homemade gun which was around 15 inches long. The officers confiscated similar weapons and his personal computer when they raided his nearby one-room apartment.
