The Guyana’s musical icon, Dave Martin has passed away at the age of 90. The President, Dr Irfaan Ali extended condolences to his family, friends and fans and called him a “true Caribbean icon.”

The Guyana’s musical icon, Dave Martin has passed away at the age of 90. The President, Dr Irfaan Ali extended condolences to his family, friends and fans and called him a “true Caribbean icon.”
Dave Martin captured the essence of the Caribbean spirit and as a leader of the Tradewinds band, he has etched his name in the folklore of the Caribbean. He blended upbeat rhythms with biting satire that spoke to the hearts and minds of all his fans and audiences.
The President stated that Martin’s music not invited them to laugh at themselves but also encouraged them to stand tall and be proud of the Guyanese and Caribbean heritage. He stated that, Dave has given all his fans and attendees a wit, vision and unique ability to capture the feelings and mood of the people.
While shedding light on “Not a Blade of Grass,” the President Irfaan Ali stated that this anthem is a testament to the powerful statement of their nation’s collective resistance against threats to the sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He continued to say that Dave Martins was more than just a musician, he was the true Caribbean person whose influence extended beyond borders. He added that his music has touched the lives of countless individuals across the region. He also stated that Martin’s loss is deeply felt, not only in Guyana but throughout the entire Caribbean and their diaspora.
“Whenever his music plays, no matter where you are, it hits a deep sense of pride in being a Caribbean person,” noted President Irfaan Ali.
While emphasising on his rhythms and melodies, the President noted that it carries the essence of shared heritage which reminds everyone from where they have come. He stated that Dave Martins music connect them to their roots and fill them with a profound love for the Caribbean region.
President Ali asserted that Dave Martin’s music will continue to live in the hearts of the audiences. He added that Guyana and the Caribbean are indeed poorer for his passing. However, they are infinitely richer for having had the privilege of experiencing his art, his passion, and his deep love for the country and the culture of the Caribbean.
While extending condolences, he remarked that Dave Martins will be dearly missed and his spirit will forever resonate in the rhythms of their Caribbean identity.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his wife, Annette and to his family, friends and massive following of fans,” noted President Ali.
