Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: The Carnival Institute of Trinidad and Tobago, profoundly known as CIRC, reminded late Calypso legend – the Mighty Terror on Friday.
CIRC took its official social media account to share information about the legend. It noted, “On Feature Friday, we share a calypso chronicle on the late Calypso legend, the Mighty Terror (1920-2007).”
Furthermore, it outlined that the year 1966 was truly a memorable one for the Mighty Terror (Fitzgerald Cornelius Henry), dubbed “The Man with the Golden Voice,” blessed as he was with a rich baritone voice. Terror was born in Arouca, Trinidad and began his illustrious calypso career in 1947 at the Calypso Palace Tent, Port-of-Spain.
The Calypso King Competition of ’66 saw the absence of the Mighty Sniper and two calypso powerhouses, the Mighty Sparrow and Lord Kitchener, who had declined to take part.
This left the Mighty Bomber, Mighty Terror, Lord Christo, Leveller and Conqueror to battle it out for the crown. Conqueror was a clear favourite with the crowd with his two songs, “Dictionary of Local Terms” and “Civil Servants as Domestics.”
The Carnival Institute of Trinidad and Tobago additionally shared that Mighty Terror, however, won the nod of the judges with his songs. “Steelband Jamboree” and “Last Year’s Happiness.” His prize was $1,000. This decision did not find favour with the audience and was met with boos.
This was to be the first and the last time that Terror would wear the Calypso Monarch crown, but over the years, he continued to perform and was honoured in 1985 with a National Award, the Hummingbird Medal (Silver) for Calypso.
The institute also shared a photo showing a happy Terror crowned King and flanked by the Queen of Carnival, Kay Christopher and Carnival Development Committee (CDC) Chairman, Senator Ronald Williams.
