The Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission is pleased to announce that two-time Calypso Monarch, King Young Destroyer will be the country’s representative at the Leeward Island Calypso Monarch competition, slated for Saturday, August 10, 2024, in Anguilla.

It will be a great contest where King Young Destroyer will mount the stage to ensure the grasping of the title for his home country.

Indeed, to King Young Destroyer, a name concomitant with excellence in the calypso art form, there existed a most distinguished history of performances that captured audience, one after the other, within the Caribbean.

Among his many achievements, he is the 2006 Caribbean Calypso King, having captured the title in Trinidad and Tobago with exciting performances of “Back of De Bus” and “One Family One People.” Both songs are highly acclaimed for their lyrical potency and cultural relevance and can be said to have symbolized his prowess as a calypsonian.

More focused and determined than ever, King Young Destroyer prepares himself for the Anguilla competition. “I have never been more committed to my Calypso art-form than I am at this moment,” he reflected, alluding to his journey and his current accomplishments.

“I plan to travel to Anguilla with a view to proudly defend my flag by rendering a most dynamic performance”, he continued.

At the very same competition, last year, the in-form performance by King Young Destroyer only came in to take second position. His near win has put more fire in his belly to take the top position this time. The artist will perform two of his most powerful pieces, “One Family One People” and “It Takes a Village,” which are very dear to his heart and touch the soul of so many people due to the strong messages of unity and community reflected within the songs.

The calypsonian has been preparing for this competition, and he has a team behind him to support every step: his wife, his father and of course, Destroyer Senior, who must have had some influence and shaped King Young Destroyer’s artistic expression.

King Young Destroyer and his delegation departed for Anguilla today morning. He showed commitment to his craft and his country, which many believe to have received huge support from Minister Daryll S Matthew.

As King Young Destroyer is about to hit the stage of the Leeward Island Calypso Monarch competition, the people of Antigua and Barbuda are expecting a performance that will further fortify his legacy in the world of calypso art form, looking forth to see him take home the crown.
