Jamaica PM Andrew Holness addresses 77th UNGA

Jamaica: Prime Minister – Andrew Holness addressed the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). During his address, PM outlined the crisis faced by the world, including climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, food and energy insecurity etc.

“I addressed the 77th United Nations General Assembly, where we gathered as the world faces unprecedented overlapping crises – the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, inflation, debt, energy and food insecurity, and natural disasters fuelled by climate change,” PM’s social media post read, adding, “I noted that while every country has been negatively impacted, we do not all have the same capacity to withstand shocks and recover, with many countries facing uneven recovery and a further widening of pre-existing development inequalities.”

While the current reality presents complex challenges, he believed that the capacity and capabilities exist within the United Nations to overcome the challenges. The gap in the middle of the challenges everyone faces and the solutions which exist, or are yet to be created, is the human will. The United Nations General Assembly is about developing the common global political will to see this as a watershed moment to deploy and accelerate transformative solutions to the interlocking challenges we face, PM Holness informed.

“My address to the 77th United Nations General Assembly covered numerous areas, including those most pressing to Jamaica, such as crime and weapons, development financing, sustainable development, climate and the environment, cybersecurity and the digital economy, and reparatory justice,” he furthermore said, adding, “Jamaica is committed to doing our part in this our sixtieth year of membership to the UN and in the years ahead, even as we continue to raise our voices about the challenges that require urgent and immediate action.”
