Honorary Consul General of Switzerland opened amid Swiss Ambassador to St Kitts and Nevis visit

St Kitts and Nevis: The government of the twin-island Federation has shared updates on the freshly built diplomatic ties between the Federation and the Swiss Confederation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Aviation stated the “warm diplomatic friendship between the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis and the Swiss Confederation was taken to even greater heights recently with a visit from the Swiss Ambassador to Saint Kitts and Nevis Rita Hammerli-Weschke.”
While sharing the highlights of the visit of the Ambassador from March 8 to March 11, 2022, the ministry claimed that this visit would “solidify the establishment of an Honorary Consulate General in Saint Kitts and Nevis”.
During the tour, Ambassador Hammerli-Weschke paid a courtesy call to various senior government officials, such as Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation, Mark Brantley, and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kaye Bass.
As per the ministry, some of the matters discussed were academic scholarships, exchange of expertise in human resources, Switzerland’s bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council, and the proposed Basseterre Valley Solar Farm.
On March 10, 2022 (Thursday), the Honorary Consulate General was opened and was named as “Honorary Consul General of Switzerland”. This opening ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Harris, Foreign Affairs Minister Brantley, other senior government officials, and prospective staff of the Honorary Consulate General.
Ambassador Hammerli-Weschke further highlighted the need for a presence in Saint Kitts and Nevis that would provide many beneficiaries to Swiss Nationals’ problems, ranging from illness to passport and other documentation.
