Heavy showers expected to return to Trinidad and Tobago by end of week

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: Eastern and central Trinidad may witness light to moderate rain with isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms through the end of the week.

A series of low-level to surface troughs are forecasted to move within Trinidad, Tobago and the Windward Islands, which may result in heavy showers, periodic rain and thunderstorms.

It is to be noted that heavier rainfall is detected to remain offshore and affect the eastern areas. The main concern would be flash flooding with gusty winds accompanied by violent rainfall, particularly from Thursday.

Lightning and thunder have been observed across the central and southern parts of Trinidad.

Weather forecast: Next five days

1. Rainfall: Rainfall between 10 and 390 millimetres is forecasted across the western half of Trinidad, while across the eastern half of Trinidad and Tobago, it is detected between 25 and 75 millimetres.

   There is a possible 100 millimetres of rainfall to be witnessed in an isolated area within eastern Trinidad and Tobago.

   However, in highly isolated areas, heavy thunderstorms and rainfall could exceed 50 millimetres.

2. Saharan Dust: Reportedly, mild concentrations of Sahara Dust are supposed to be present throughout the forecast period with rainfall-tempering air quality impacts.
3. Hazards: Primarily through Wednesday to Friday, periods of rain, heavy showers, and thunderstorms will originate, which will produce cloud-to-ground lightning gusty winds that could exceed 55 KM/H.

   The periodic heavy rainfall can trigger street flooding. Notably, the landslides are also possible in the elevated areas of northern Trinidad and eastern Tobago.

   Elevated winds are likely to continue into the weekend.

4. Marine: It is to be noted that Seas are forecast to be moderate with waves in open waters, which generally reached as high as 2.0 meters on Wednesday. There is the possibility of it getting as high as 3.0 meters at the weekends.

   In the covered areas, waves are detected to reach up to 1.5 meters, choppy in heavy showers and thunderstorms along the north-facing coastlines of Trinidad and Tobago.
