Hayley Matthews, the West Indies women’s skipper, was named the 2023 ICC T20I Women’s Cricketer of the Year. She became the second West Indies player to earn such a prestigious honour.

Former captain Stafanie Taylor was the cricketer to win this award in 2015. The winner was decided on the basis of voting by the ICC Voting Academy and global fans.

The dynamic all-rounder captain of the team, Hayley Matthews, beat Australia’s Ellyse Perry, Sri Lankan Chamari Athapaththu and England’s Sophie Ecclestone to take the honour.

Hayley Matthews had a tremendous 2023 as she delivered a series of remarkable performances. She dominated with both bat and ball, which is clearly visible in her figures.

She scored 700 runs with a strike rate of 132.32 and claimed 19 wickets with her off-spin bowling with an economy rate of 6.84.

The pinnacle of her year was a 132 score against Australia in the second T20I at North Sydney Oval. She scored a total of 310 runs in that series, scoring 99 in the first and 79 in the third T20I. This is the first time that a women’s player has reached such a notable figure in a single calendar year.

Moreover, Matthews expressed her gratitude for winning such a prestigious honour and stated, “Growing up, I saw many of my idols getting this type of award a lot, so to be able to come out as a player with this award is special for me.”

She added that it feels great seeing all the hard work paying off. She is blessed to have had a good year with both bat and ball, and she is blessed to represent her team and help them win, wearing a West Indies jersey.

It is to be further added that Surya Kumar Yadav’s explosive batsman was named the ICC T20I cricketer of the year. It was his second successive award.
