Haiti: Deacon’s wife who was kidnapped on September 26 released by abductors

Port-au-Prince, Haiti: The Deacon’s wife – Marie Marthe Laurent Lafaille, who was abducted during an attack on First Baptist Church in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, has now been released.

The Baptist World Alliance declared woman’s release on Friday. Pastor Josué Mathieu wrote to the BWA and cited that, “Glorify the Lord! He is still the Great Liberator! A thousand and one thanks for your solidarity.”

Lafaille’s husband – 60-year-old deacon Sylner Lafaille, was killed when armed gunmen stormed the early-morning worship service at – First Baptist Church in the capital city of Haiti – Port-au-Prince on September 26, 2021.

In addition, the United States Department in late August had issued a Level 4 travel advisory for the island country. The issued statement cites, “Do not travel to Haiti because of kidnapping, crime, civil unrest and COVID-19.”

Besides this, the island nation was hard hit by 7.2 magnitudes of earthquake on August 14 2021, which took away the lives of more than 2,200 people. More than 53,000 buildings have been destroyed by the earthquake that also includes – schools, churches, homes, and other infrastructure.

Mass deportation also took the place of the Haitian migrants from the Mexico-Texas border.

Besides this, the island is also battling with various issues such as – political instability, gang violence, poverty, higher crime rate and COVID-19 outbreak.

In the month of July, the most impoverished nation of the Caribbean region lost its President, Jovenel Moise.

President was assassinated on July 7, 2021, at his own residence, in which incident the wife of President – Martine Moise was also injured in the attack.

Recently, Prime Minister – Ariel Henry dismissed the electoral representative’s members, which once again led to the postponing of elections in Haiti.

Earlier, the elections were postponed in Haiti amid the surge in COVID-19 infections.

The PwC firms operating in the Caribbean region have collectively donated US$50,000 for disaster relief, & recovery efforts in Haiti after the 7.2 magnitudes of the earthquake struck the island country.
