Guyana, UK collaborate on $46.3 Million ‘SMART’ health facilities initiative

Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Health of Guyana has recently shared an update regarding the productive meeting between Minister of Health – Dr Frank Anthony and British High Commissioner – Jane Miller.

According to the recent update by the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Guyana, at his Brickdam Office, Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony, along with the MOH Permanent Secretary, Malcolm Watkins, met with the British High Commissioner, Jane Miller to discuss achievements, evaluate findings, and address key issues for the sustainability of Strengthening Health Facility Resilience in the Caribbean – “SMART” (safer and greener) hospitals initiative.

Through the social media update, the Health Ministry of Guyana, the nation was among seven Caribbean countries to benefit from the $46.3 million UK-funded ‘SMART’ Healthcare Facilities project.

According to the official stats, to date, this initiative has been established at five (5) Health facilities across Guyana, such as the Mabaruma Hospital in Region One (Barima – Waini); Leonora Cottage Hospital in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); Diamond Diagnostic Centre in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica); Paramakatoi Health Centre in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni); and Lethem Regional Hospital located in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).

As per the MOH, Miller was accompanied by PAHO/WHO Representative of Guyana, Dr Felipe Codina; Senior Officer Responsible for SMART and Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction Adviser attached to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) – Caribbean Development Team, Simone Banister; and Programme Officer Responsible for SMART, Rosanne Kadir.

It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with PAHO and WHO, has been working tirelessly to provide a healthy future to Guyana and its people. In the past as well, the nation has jointly worked with health organisations for the betterment of the residents and citizens.
