Guyana: President of Guyana Dr Irfaan Ali said the people’s aspirations must be embodied in the transformational direction of the Government.
“It is only when we have this dynamic blend that we can realise the long-term, transformational objectives of the country, the medium-term transformational objectives, but importantly, build short-term returns for the people whilst we work on the long agenda.”
President Ali made this assertion as he delivered the feature address at the opening of the 2022 Berbice Expo and Trade Fair on Friday evening at the Albion Sports Complex. The highly anticipated event was held after a three-year hiatus under the theme “Advancing Food Security through Agricultural Sustainability and Innovation”.
Regions 5 and 6, President Ali emphasised, are well positioned to be the centrepiece for growth and development.
The President outlined several initiatives on the cards for the region to further catalyse growth and development, including considering a new, more modern bridge across the Berbice River and creating a stadium at Palmyra.
He announced that his administration is also moving ahead with constructing an oil refinery in Region Six and will soon be inviting investors to submit their respective proposals for the construction of a 30,000-barrel facility.
President Ali was joined by members of the cabinet, members of the private sector as well as regional representatives at the ceremony.
On the same day, President Dr Irfaan Ali paid his last respects to the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) stalwart, Philomena Sahoye-Shury. CCH at Freedom House today.
Sahoye-Shury passed away at the age of 91 on October 2, 2022.
President Ali praised his former party comrade for her stellar contributions to the citizens of Guyana, the country’s development, and the “rich legacy” she has left behind. He said that Sahoye-Shury was an “embodiment of Guyana” and did not only live her life in support of her party but of Guyana as a whole.
President Ali added that Sahoye-Shury reflected what national life is about—representing the peoples’ interest, fighting for democracy and the rule of law as w fighting for the freedom of the people.
“Her mark in history is phenomenal, and she leaves behind a huge legacy—one of true commitment, patriotism, one of a deep sense of national pride and hard work for people and the development of Guyana.”
