French government includes the ‘right to abortion’ in its constitution, highlighting the “MyBodyMyChoice” message. The bill to amend the country’s 1958 Constitution was passed with a majority in Parliament on Monday under the gilded ceiling of the Palace of Versailles.
Article 34 in the Constitution of France is now considered the law that sets out the conditions in which a woman has complete freedom to proceed with an abortion. The country has become the first country in the world to do so.
The decision aimed at the “Guaranteed freedom” to resort to “Voluntary termination of pregnancy” in the French Constitution by both the houses of Parliament, the National Assembly, and the Senate.
“France is at the forefront. I’m proud of this Congress which will say that the right to get an abortion will now be part of our basic law”, remarked the head of the lower house- Yael Braun-Pivet, during the opening address of the joint meeting.
The bill was approved by an overwhelming response from MPs and senators as they supported the move by 780 votes to 72 in a joint vote of both houses of Parliament, marking a historic move that comes as the United States rollback of abortion laws. The parliamentarians welcomed this announcement with a standing ovation.
As the results of the vote were shown on screens in front of the Eiffel Tower, hundreds of women’s rights activists and supporters gathered in central Paris and celebrated. The decision reflects the authorities’ concern regarding women’s freedom and their well-being.
“We’re sending a message to all women: your body belongs to you and no one can decide for you”, said Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to lawmakers after the voting.
French Prime Minister Atal, the youngest and first openly homosexual, expressed his concern in Parliament that the right to abortion is under threat. This initiative will instil hope among women, and they will be confident in making life decisions.
“I am telling women, within our border and beyond: The era of a world of hope is starting,” added PM Attal.
With the emergence of this law, the present must respond to history. This right in the Constitution will close the door on the tragedy of the past and its traces of pain and suffering. This will also stop reactionaries from attacking women.
The people of the nation were filled with joy and expressed their happiness to the government for their immense understanding of their pain. “Thank you for protecting women! Tears of happiness that there is still hope for the world!” quoted one.
“Well done, France! A country who actually treats women with respect as they can make their own decisions regarding their own reproductive health. Viva la France”, commented another.
