Dominica to celebrate three indigenous and native languages in History Week 2024
Dominica is all set to celebrate its 46th anniversary of Independence on 3rd November, 2024.

Dominica is all set to celebrate History Week 2024 from October 7th to 11th, 2024 as a part of the 46th anniversary of Independence. This week will commemorate three Indigenous and Native Languages of Dominica i.e, Kalinago, Kokoy & Kwéyòl.
This history week is a celebration of fostering rich and vibrant culture of Dominica along with preserving the native languages of the citizens of the island nation. This celebration will play a huge role in encouraging the younger generation to learn and foster a sense of pride and belonging for their languages.
The History Week 2024 will also serve as a huge platform in highlighting the crucial role played by indigenous languages in shaping the social fabric of the Nature Isle.
While shedding light on the significance of all these three indigenous and native languages, the Commonwealth of Dominica Division of Culture stated that these languages outline not only the cultural heritage but also the identity of the diverse communities of the island nation.
KOKOY
This Kokoy language is widely spoken among the natives of the North East region of Dominica, in areas such as Marigot, Wesley, Woodfordhill and as far North of the island in Clifton. It is also considered an English creole language which is similar to that spoken in Jamaica or Antigua.
KWEYOL
The division noted that Kweyol language forms an integral part in one of the cultural traditions, Chanté Mas. It along, with Kilti focuses on the origins of some of the popular Chanté Mas Songs. “Where the talk of the day or stories were placed into songs, and these songs have been passed on from generation to generation.”
KALINAGO
The Kalinago‘s were the first Inhabitants of Dominica, journeyed from South America and landed on the island and gave the island nation, their First Native Language.
The authorities noted that this week will play a key role in fostering the significance of these languages by teaching and guiding the people by conducting workshops, discussions and cultural events.
DOMINICA 46th ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE
Dominica is all set to celebrate its 46th anniversary of Independence on 3rd November, 2024. And, for the same, the authorities have unveiled exciting schedule of events and activities, commemorating the island nation’s vibrant culture, traditions, dresses, costumes, languages, songs, culinary delights and many more.
The authorities have urged all the citizens to unite together to celebrate their Independence and the rich cultural heritage of Dominica.
